Pencil Drawing of Buffalo Left Lower Mat 1995 Kenneth J. Hurley
$100
Information found on line:
A self-taught artist…although his subject matter reflects history and wildlife, the buffalo is his speciality and artistic first love. Hurley’s paintings and sketches have been exhibited in many major shows in the Northwest where he has won a myriad of honors and awards. He has participated in many one and two man shows, including one in Panama. He is also very well known for his Quick Draws at the shows.
Ken’s latest honors was being chosen to represent western & wildlife artists at the “Spirit of the West”, during the Puyallup Fair, Sept. 2003, with Fred Oldfield and three other artists. Plus, he was also invited back to the one year celebration of “The Fred Oldfield Western Heritage Center” to do a Quick Draw and show his talents in making buckskin clothing. Ken’s had a great season showing his art work at major shows and one-man shows.

Various Sizes and Prices
Polly Ann Davis (1933-1979)
Born in Shirley Center, Massachusetts. Active artist, starting at a very young age. (Her father, Nord Davis, Sr. and brother, Erik Davis were both artists. Both are deceased.) She worked in watercolors, pastels and oils. She also did commissions as a portrait artist. Diversity of her work is amazing. Most of these pieces were painted late 1940-50’s. Polly Ann signed her work in various manners. Signatures may be in large or small handwriting, on the left or right and on the reverse. Polly Ann was a talented artist. She passed away at the age of 45 in 1979. Here is an opportunity to own one or more pieces of original artwork done by this extraordinary artist.

FRITZ FAISS (1905-1981)
Fritz Faiss (1905–1981), German artist, philosopher, author, and poet, was born one of fourteen children in Furtwangen, in the Black Forest of Germany on March 6, 1905. His mother gave him the gift of music and storytelling; his father, the gift of scientific and mechanical thinking. As a young boy he preferred to travel through Germany and Europe alone, on foot or on bicycle, with nothing but his sketchbook and passport. He made contact with leading artists of his time, including Adolf Hoelzel, and was not only a teacher, but a medical doctor as well. Faiss was accepted at the Bauhaus and studied under Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky.
By 1937, Faiss was named a “degenerate” artist by the Nazi regime as the rise of Hitlerism grew in force. Although he was forbidden to paint, exhibit, or send his work outside of Germany, he continued to paint secretively at great risk; he risked his life to save his work just as he risked his life to save the lives of many of his friends. Although the Nazis destroyed Faiss’s studio twice, he saved some of his woodcuts from Gestapo searches by hiding them in woodpiles or disguising them by pasting paintings over them and hanging them in his studio. He was forced to give up his medical practice and was taken to a forced labor camp, where he suffered under medical experiments. Faiss was one of three who survived the camp and was released by American intervention.
He spent years recovering from the labor camp and his first exhibition after the war was fittingly sponsored by the American Military Government, in Pforzheim, in 1947. His work has been exhibited in most capitals in Europe as well as the east and west coasts of the United States.
In 1951, Faiss left behind a professorship at Frankfurt-am-Main and came to California. He accepted a position at the University of California at Los Angeles. He left after being criticized for encouraging individualism in the arts, and accepted a position at California State University, Northridge. He retired in 1973 as a professor Emeritus. Faiss suffered a stroke in 1976, which greatly influenced his later work. He took another challenge in stride as he used his left hand to paint.
Others call his work expressionist, but Fritz Faiss’s work stands alone; he calls his work “Faissism.” He shifts easily from the naturalistic to the abstract. He was an artist during the years after the first World War, an exciting and unique time; a period of remarkable spiritual uplift and great idealism. Musicians tend to enjoy the harmonistic themes in his work. Other themes include the life of Christ, war, the Hawaiian coast, and Big Sur.
Faiss liked to use pen and ink, silverpoint, woodcut, and monoprint- but is perhaps best known for his mastery of encaustic (wax) painting. He has written several books and is famous for his color theories. The images in many of his paintings reflect his ability to start life anew after the war and reflect Faiss’s inner balance and peace. (Biography from Trout Museum Website)

ABOUT THE ARTIST
REUEL DECKARD was born in Illinois on January 8th 1927
He died on February 8th 2005 in California
From his youth and through his teens, Reuel Deckard spent the summers roaming the woods and fields around
his grandfather’s farm in Southern Illinois. He helped on the farm: plowing, driving the team, etc.
He studied and sketched the wonders of nature that surrounded him there.
Some of his first paintings were done on the window shades in the old farmhouse.
This delighted visitors and family alike.
He won a scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago at the age of 12.
He went to a life class after serving in the Army. But his greatest teacher was always the
rolling prairie, the horse, mountains, deserts and all of nature at its fullest.
In addition to his sketches and paintings, Mr. Deckard was also an accomplished sculptor
and created a few bronze statues. The oil paintings, sketches, sculptures,
drawings and watercolors of Reuel Deckard are treasured by many
collectors, public and private, throughout the United States.
One of Mr. Deckard’s largest paintings is located in Victorville California at the Out Post Cafe.
The painting was featured in “The West Magazine” in the 1960’s.
The painting depicted pioneers coming from the East to settle new territory.
Reuel Deckard lived in Texas, Arizona and California. Mr. Deckard had a gallery in
Diamond Springs California for several years. He relocated to Jackson California in 1986.
His work was on display at the Jackson Museum. Mr. Deckard retired to Crescent City California
in the early 1990’s. He continued to paint for himself and for
special commissions until his eyesight diminished.
In the 1980’s, Mr. Deckard produced 950 limited edition prints each of four paintings:
Carson City to Nevada, Letter From Home, Wild Horse Canyon and Snow Scene.
A few prints are known to be signed and numbered.
